Effective emergency response is matter of Competence, not Compliance. Compliance keeps you on the right side of the law, but Competence puts the fire out and keeps you alive. Compliance allows you to operate your vessel. Competence helps you come home safe. Compliance makes sure the proper equipment is onboard and functional. Competence makes sure people know how to use it.
The maritime industry is much safer today than it has ever been, thanks in large part to better crew training. On the other hand, Nature and the oceans remain unchanged; hostile and unforgiving. During an emergency at sea, whether fire, flooding, grounding or man overboard, there is no "Pause" or "Rewind" button. Your crew will have little or no advance warning and only one chance to get it right. In spite of all their certificates, people on well-equipped boats still succumb because they are unable to carry out their plan, or worse, the plan they try to carry out is fatally flawed.
Certificates demonstrate training Compliance, but they are no guarantee of Competence. Your crewmembers learned basic skills at the training facility, but are they Competent to respond to an emergency onboard your vessel? Do they know how to use your equipment? Do they know how to work together as a team? They have the Will to survive, but do they have the Skill?
WolfRampant is a new company from Capt. Jon Kjaerulff, developed to help mariners respond more effectively to emergencies. Using the knowledge, insight and experience acquired in nearly forty years in the maritime industry, Jon and his team work with mariners and their companies to fine-tune crews' abilities to respond effectively in emergencies. WolfRampant's MESA program is the perfect complement to your crew's previous training, because we assess their ability to put their knowledge to use with their own equipment, on their own vessel, working with their own response plan. We evaluate how their training is working, and if necessary, help make it work better.
At WolfRampant, we focus on safety and emergency response items which are beyond the checklist. Our audience is companies who are interested in more than just Compliance, but want to make sure their crews have the will and the skill to mount a Competent response.
